Dynamic Movements – “Music For Exercise & Relaxation” (2024)

Dynamic Movements are the dynamic duo of Johan Agebjörn and Mikael Ögren. Their new album, Music For Exercise & Relaxation, was quite literally inspired by the exercise videos that were ubiquitous on late 1970s/early 1980s televisions and VCRs. Teal leotards, sweatbands, Reebok Pumps, and Thigh Masters are conjured forth in waves of era-appropriate synths with some hints of modern beat-making, giving the tracks a feel that is both retro and contemporary.

Many of the tracks are upbeat fun, but a few go a bit deeper. “Phase Induction (Seahawks Version)” moves in a more sensual direction, a hint of saxophone harkening to dark, humid, slow-moving nights under the stars (that sax really comes into its own on “Dilating Departure (Dr. Atmo Version)”). “A Tribute To Florian Schneider” is exactly what you’d expected based on the title, a Kraftwerk-esque number reminiscent of the Germans’ style. Overall the A side carries more tempo, the B side more mood, giving you the best of both worlds.
