My prior exposure to Bergur Anderson was limited to the 2023 cassette come, Memory: fieldwork, an experimental sonic collage created in partnership with Katrina Niebergal (who joins him on this record for its most experimental track, the appropriately titled “Katrina’s Song”). I assumed his latest, Unisong, would be much the same. Instead I got a bit of a left turn in a quiet, languid, acoustic-guitar-driven treat. Built on a folk foundation, the deep bass and percussion puts the sound somewhere between that and shoegaze (Folkgaze? Shoefolk? Shofolkgaze?). The vocals have a resigned quality, not sad or downtrodden so much as conveying a sense of ambivalence. A high point for me is “Cricket Dream”, which dips more than a toe, perhaps an entire foot, into the realm of psych, a David Lynch-ian fevered hallucination.

Unisong had a limited vinyl pressing and copies are still available at the Futura Resistenza Bancamp page HERE.
